Set up

Palm flat on the wall behind you at shoulder height, then turn your chest away from it.

How to do it well

  1. 1

Breathe out into the stretch rather than pushing into it.

  2. 2

Half the time on each side.

  3. 3

Never stretch into pain — a strong pull is the ceiling.

The cue you’ll hear most

“Breathe out into it. Never push into pain.”

The single most common fault on this move — your voice coach calls it out a quarter of the way into every interval.

Make it easier

Lower the hand toward hip height, which shortens the lever considerably.

Make it harder

Raise the hand above shoulder height and turn a little further.
